🗞 A crazily compelling day

G'day sports fans,

Ashes sledge: “Would you like me to bowl a piano and see if you can play that?” - Merv Huges to Graham Gooch.

🏏 A potentially series-ending injury to Nathan Lyon triggered an hour of mayhem in the final session of the second Ashes Test at Lord's, as a hobbled Australia attack fought an unrelenting short-pitched battle to rein in England's marauding batters.

Lyon looked to have torn a calf muscle.

By stumps on another crazily compelling day, England are 4-278 and 138 runs behind Australia's first innings with Harry Brook 45no and skipper Ben Stokes unbeaten on 17, although they might have been in a position of greater strength had they kept their heads after Australia lost their spinner to a calf problem.

Instead of seizing their tactical advantage with Australia suddenly missing a vital component of their bowling attack, England went full kamikaze and lost 3-34 from seven overs in near-identical manner – caught behind square leg, slogging at short-pitched bowling.

Second LV= Insurance Ashes Test, Lord's (day two of five)

  • Australia 416 (Smith 110, Head 77; Tongue 3-98, Robinson 3-100)

  • England 278-4 (Duckett 98, Crawley 48, Brook 45*)

  • England are 138 runs behind

🇦🇺 A ruthless Brisbane outfit has dismantled a hapless Richmond in its latest Gabba demolition, producing its biggest win of the season and handing the Tigers their greatest loss since their premiership era.

Joe Daniher kicked five goals, while Lachie Neale starred with two goals from 34 touches in the 20.14 (134) to 7.11 (53) win. It was the Tigers’ biggest loss since Round 23, 2016. (match report)

🏉 The Sharks unleashed their full array of attacking weapons in a 52-16 win over arch-rivals. Defeated Dragons skipper Ben Hunt admitted “it seems like we’re getting worse”(match report)

🏉 The Wallaroos were no match for world champions New Zealand, crashing to a 50-0 loss to open their Pacific Four women's rugby series campaign.

Any hopes that the Australians were bridging the gap on their trans-Tasman rivals was erased early at Brisbane's Kayo Stadium on Thursday night with the visitors dominating every aspect of play.

🗣️ Brisbane Broncos legend Darren Lockyer says Reece Walsh will need to change his attitude after he was found guilty by the NRL judiciary for referee abuse and received a three-match ban.

"He has to change his approach towards the officials after that because he's on notice now with the referees," Lockyer said on Wide World of Sports' QLDER.

Soon we will have all the answers with the 110th edition of the French Grand Tour starting on Saturday (1 July) in Bilbao, the largest city in the Basque Country, Spain.

The 32-year-old retired in January 2020 but now plans to return after giving birth to her two children.

🏎 Lewis Hamilton [who won just the six titles between 2014-202] says Formula 1 should consider further restrictions on car development to stop teams building long periods of domination.

He said teams with superior cars can start work on their next design earlier than rivals as they need to spend less resources on the current season.

"If everyone had a time [to start on the next car], no-one has a head start and then it's a real race," he said.

⚽️ Bayern Munich are ready to offer £80m to try and sign striker Harry Kane, 29, from Tottenham after an initial bid of £60.2m for the England captain was rejected.
