Magpies defeat Cats in Perth as Jordan De Goey stars with five goals

The Collingwood Magpies have jumped to second spot on the AFL ladder after defeating Geelong 57-35 in Perth on Thursday night.

In front of 22,077 fans at Optus Stadium, the Magpies were in control for the entire match in wet conditions.

Collingwood's Jordan De Goey put his recent off-field controversy behind him by reminding the AFL world just how talented he is, scoring five goals on the night.

Adam Treloar was also a standout for the Magpies with a game-high 34 disposals.

🤦🏻‍♂️ A Perth football fan is facing a $50k fine and two weeks in quarantine after running onto the field late in the clash between Geelong and Collingwood at Optus Stadium.

AFL to bring forward grand final date in compressed fixture

“If we condense from round eight onwards, we might be able to condense for a six-to-eight-week period, as long as we can make it work with the players and the clubs,” AFL Fixture boss Travis Auld, told SEN.

Released on Wednesday afternoon, the plan reveals that the 27 games remaining on the fixture are now set to be completed in 34 days.

(Fri) Sydney FC (1.83) v Wellington Phoenix (3.75): Wellington are currently on a 4 game win streak. Sydney FC have won 8 of their last 11 against Wellington, losing just once.

(Sat) Perth Glory (1.36) v Central Coast Mariners (8.0): Playing at Central Coast Stadium, Perth are the official home team. Glory specialise in grinding out results under Tony Popovic.

(Sun) Brisbane Roar (2.55) v Adelaide United (2.88): The Roar were the in-form A-League side since New Years Day but with coach Robbie Fowler departing the club, there’s a certain element of unknown about what this new permanent Warren Moon side is going to look like.

EPL: PFA Player of the Year - Kevin De Bruyne touches odds-on over Jordan Henderson

Kevin De Bruyne’s imperious performances since the Premier League resumed have seen him go (from 3.0 to 1.95) favourite to be crowned PFA Player of the Year.

That means he’s nudged Liverpool talisman Jordan Henderson out of the top spot on the Oddschecker grids, now drifting out to (4.33).

The bookies’ shortlist is almost entirely made up of Liverpool players, with the star of the first half of the season, Sadio Mane, now (5.5) third-favourite.

Last year’s unanimous winner, Virgil van Dijk, is (12.0) to retain his crown as best individual Premier League player.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is (13.0), then comes Mo Salah (19.0).

📈 Stat: Lionel Messi has become the 1st player ever in La Liga history to record at least 20 goals (he is on 22) and 20 assists in a single season. The only player who has done better across Top 5 European Leagues was Thierry Henry in 2002/03 while playing for Arsenal: 24 goals and 20 assists.

Reds (-16) v Western Force: An excellent opportunity for Reds to strengthen their position at the top of the table, after last weeks (18 all draw). Western Force had a shaky Waratahs outfit on the ropes; leading at half time but ultimately, unable to go with their opponents (23-14).

Waratahs (+9) v Brumbies: The old rivalry will be renewed in Sydney on Saturday night. The Brumbies enter Round 3 off the back of a bye and could have too much here.

Super Rugby Aotearoa

Hurricanes (+2.5) v Blues: Having proved it was no fluke in the first round of Super Rugby Aotearoa with a 30-20 win in Eden Park, the Blues should come away with a statement win. Expect Blues to cover the (-2.5) line.

Chiefs (-6) v Highlanders: After defeating the Chiefs at home in Round 1, the Highlanders will look to win back to back games against them for the first time since 2016.

🏎 F1 - Hungarian Grand Prix

There’s no rest for the wicked this season as Formula One ventures across the border to Hungary on Sunday night.

Mercedes have gone back-to-back since the season started with both Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton winning the Austrian and Styrian races.

It doesn’t look like either Ferrari (who imploded last week with both cars crashing into each other) or Red Bull are capable of challenging the favourites again this week.
