😧 Barcelona say Lionel Messi will not be staying at the club "because of financial and structural obstacles".

"Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled," the club said.

Lionel Messi had agreed to stay at Barcelona on a deal until 2026 which included reducing his wages to half of his previous salary.

The announcement was dependent on player departures that would allow Barca to fund the Argentina captain's wages.

To meet the Financial fair play rules, and keep Messi, Barcelona would have to reduce their wage bill by around AU$300m.

Messi became a free agent after his contract - that reportedly paid him AU$250m a season - expired on 30 June.

🏍 Nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi has announced that he will retire at the end of the MotoGP season.

Speaking at a news conference before the Styrian Grand Prix, the 42-year-old Italian said "it's a very sad moment".

Rossi, whose Grand Prix career has spanned 25 years, is the only rider in history to win World Championships in 125cc, 250cc, 500cc and MotoGP.

🏉 Australia have dropped three players from their Bledisloe Cup opener against New Zealand on Saturday after they broke curfew with a drinking session.

Winger Marika Koroibete, number eight Isi Naisarani and prop Pone Fa'amausili continued to drink alcohol for more than two hours after curfew following a team-bonding session in Auckland.

Coach Dave Rennie said the players had "angered" the rest of the squad.

🏆 This year's Rugby League World Cup in England has been postponed until 2022 after the withdrawal of champions Australia, and New Zealand.

The two countries pulled out of the tournament citing "player welfare and safety concerns" related to Covid-19.

The World Cup, featuring men's, women's and wheelchair events, was set to start on 23 October.

"It became unfeasible and irresponsible for us to carry on," said Jon Dutton, chief executive of the tournament.
