US Open champion Thiem won 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 6-3 in the opening singles match at the annual season-ending event.

⛳️ The Masters

Johnson is the Master of Augusta

Australian challenger Cameron Smith, was thoroughly enjoying his week at Augusta and went 3-under through his first nine holes to close the gap.

DJ pushed the lead back out to five shots with back-to-back birdies on the 13th and 14th before Smith pulled off an incredible birdie on 15 to keep his hopes alive.

Smith tugged his second shot into the par five 60 yards left of the green but got up and down to sit in a tie for second place with Sunjaei Im.

In all honestly is was a precession by Johnson who put together the four rounds to win, without breaking sweat.

Sony Open winner - Smith (-15) did take a record of his own, when he became the first player ever to shoot 4 consecutive rounds in the 60s. He will take plenty from this week and will surely contend at big tournaments in the future.

Johnson finished up at (-20), two shots ahead of Tigers Woods’ (1997) and Jordan Speith’s (2015) scoring record.

Defending champion Tiger Woods made a nightmare 10, his worst score on any major hole, on the par-3 12th at Augusta National in Sunday’s final round of the Masters.

Top Amateur: US Amateur champ Andy Ogletree finished on two under.

💰 Shout out to the Sport Journal Club members, who invested wisely with both Dustin Johnson (winner) and Brooks Koepka (place).

👕 Congrats to member Lex Stanley who was bravest, going for Johnson to win by 3 shots. some Sport Journal march is winging its way to you.

AFL tossing up further rule changes for season 2021

The AFL is once again looking to ease congestion with two potential rule changes currently being considered for season 2021.

The league is tossing up whether to drop the interchange cap by 15 per-game, which would reduce rotations to 75 according to Fox Footy's Tom Morris.

It's understood the game is even looking at reducing rotations to 60 per-game in time for the 2022 season.

The second potential rule change being tossed up would see the man on the mark moving back a further five metres at kick-ins.

At the moment the man on the mark currently stands 10 metres back from the goalsquare after the rule was changed from five metres prior to the 2019 season.

It's hoped the rule changes will create extra flow in the game with more goals being scored as congestion eases.

Rivals Eye Storm Star

Jahrome Hughes is a man in demand, with a host of clubs chasing the services of the Storm halfback

According to The Courier Mail, the Warriors, Tigers and Titans are leading the hunt for the grand final-winning No. 7.

Hughes says he wants to stay with Melbourne, but after the club offered him $1 million over two years he is set to test the open market.

The Kiwi international is said to be chasing a contract closer to $700,000 per season.

“I would like to stay but I understand the Storm will have salary-cap pressures,” Hughes told The Courier Mail.

Suaalii to be patient

Schoolboy sensation Joseph Suaalii could rock up at Bondi having not played a game of football in over two years.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Suaalii has agreed to sign with the Roosters on a three-year contract from 2022 onwards.

However, he is unable to join the Chooks for 2021 as South Sydney hold his registration.

The Rabbitohs reportedly won’t let him leave a year early after he messed them around with a bidding war involving Rugby Australia.

Queensland claim 2020 State of Origin title over NSW Blues

The Queensland Maroons outclassed the NSW Blues 24-18 to claim the Women's State of Origin title for the first time.

While the Maroons once held a 17-year dynasty in the interstate challenge, Friday night's victory marked the first time Queensland came home victorious since the Women's State of Origin was officially instated two-years ago.

It was Queensland's forwards who provide the platform for their playmakers to pull the strings in attack as they raced out to a 24-6 lead with 10-minutes remaining.

Taking the foot off the gas, holes opened up in defence and saw NSW launch a brave late comeback to come within a converted try.

But it wasn't to be as the Maroons claimed their first State of Origin shield.

It was a momentous win for Queensland hero Ali Brigginshaw who capped off her spectacular NRLW resume with her first Origin win.

"To my girls, what an effort," Brigginshaw said at full time.

Almost nine months after it paused, the 2020 AFC Champions League resumes on Sunday and while it has been a bit of a saga, there is no reason why an Australia team can’t lift the trophy after the final against Persepolis of Iran on December 18.

Thompson chasing another $1 million payday

Trainer John Thompson is chasing the $1 million provincial race double with the much improved Purple Sector in The Gong (1500m) at Kembla Grange.

Purple Sector has won his last two starts impressively and will be challenging for race favouritism in The Gong against what is expected to be an outstanding line-up of sprinter-milers.

Thompson, who prepared Sweet Deal to win the $1 million The Hunter at Newcastle last Saturday, said Purple Sector had continued to thrive after winning the Spring Mile (1600m) at Randwick then the Listed Cup Day Plate (1800m) at Flemington.

“Purple Sector has returned a better horse this spring since being gelded,’’ Thompson said. (racenet)

Lewis Hamilton wins seventh Formula 1 title

Lewis Hamilton clinched a seventh World Championship and became the most successful racing driver ever with a masterful victory in the Turkish Grand Prix on Sunday.

The Mercedes driver equalled Michael Schumacher's achievement in terms of titles, after already surpassing the German's number of race wins last month.

Victory at a treacherously wet and slippery Istanbul Park track in a topsy-turvy race was the 94th of the 35-year-old Briton's career.

As he received the congratulations of his team, Hamilton was almost overcome with emotion in the car after the race, saying: "To all the kids out there, dream the impossible."

What happens next?

Hamilton has clinched the title with three races still to go, two in Bahrain starting in two weeks' time and then a finale in Abu Dhabi in mid-December.

History Made by Argentina

📺 What a Leader!

The Pumas beat the All Blacks 25-15 in Sydney on Saturday after failing to do so in 33 previous attempts since 1976.

Argentina coach Mario Ledesma said his players came "through hell" to claim a first victory over three-time world champions New Zealand.

"Unreal, unreal, surreal," said an emotional Ledesma after the Rugby Championship win.

"We have been through hell and the boys just kept ticking. Just so proud of them."Los Pumas record their first ever win in their 30th Test against All Blacks.

  • New Zealand lose back to back Tests for the first time since 2011

  • Nicolas Sanchez scores the 3rd most points by a player ever against NZ (25)

  • Argentina had not played a Test in 402 days!

Michael Cheika influence

Amongst the many storylines from the Pumas’ maiden Test victory over the All Blacks on Saturday, the influence of Cheika – the inspiring and skillful takedown of the All Blacks, their victory had Cheika’s fingerprints all over it.

“What are you waiting for - you’ve got everything.”

“You’ve got big players, physical players, young players, a lot of energy - go and take it. Just go and take it, what are you waiting for? - Argentina's Captain Pablo Matera

And with those words of encouragement, Michael Cheika helped sow the belief Los Pumas would use to topple the All Blacks, according to captain Pablo Matera.

❤️ RIP Greg Growden

The Australian sporting community is mourning the death of legendary journalist Greg Growden.

Growden lost his battle with cancer at the age of 60.

World-renowned his rugby journalism (among other sports), Growden died on Saturday night at Royal Prince Alfred’s Lighthouse facility.

He was one of only two journalists in the world to cover every Rugby World Cup since 1987.

He served as the Sydney Morning Herald’s chief rugby union correspondent from 1987 to 2012.

“Greg was widely respected here in Australia and abroad and made an exceptional contribution to the game,” Rugby Australia chief executive Rob Clarke said on Sunday. (SMH)

🏏 Cricket

The former Australian captain believes Justin Langer needs to tinker with the team ahead of the India series. Cricket legend Mark Taylor has praised rising star Will Pucovski for taking time away from cricket to deal with mental health issues and called for the youngster to open the batting for Australia in its upcoming Test series against India.

🥊 Boxing

"I can't believe they took that away from me" - Moloney

The boxing world has reacted largely in shock and anger to Australian fighter Andrew Moloney’s ridiculous loss to Joshua Franco in Vegas on Sunday (AEDT).

Fight referees robbed the Aussie star when they took half an hour to agree on a no-decision verdict on the basis they thought Moloney had accidentally headbutted his opponent.

Moloney in fact opened up Franco’s right eye with some lethal left jabs, and was on track to win the fight before it was stopped by the dreadful decision.

Legendary promoter Bob Arum, who organised the fight, was asked what it would take to stop bad decisions happening in these big title bouts.

“Get the f**k out of Vegas,” he said, after getting in a heated argument with the Commission’s executive director Bob Bennett after the decision was revealed.

“They kept with it to protect the referee who didn’t know what the hell he was doing.”

Terence Crawford makes a statement

On Sunday (AEDT) in Las Vegas, Terence Crawford took his time, but exploded in the fourth round against Kell Brook to record his 37th career win and yet another defence of his WBO welterweight belt.

A former world champion, Brook (39-3) started strong behind his jab, and found a home for his right hand on occasion.

But it didn’t particularly matter as Crawford (37-0), who began slowly, picked his moment, and landed a short right hand out of a southpaw stance that saw Brook collapse into the ropes.

The Brit was able to stay on his feet after the knockdown was scored, but Crawford came back for more, with referee Tony Weeks stepping in before the undefeated American’s opponent could be sent to the canvas.
