Tributes flow for Samoan hooker

The NRL and Samoan rugby league communities are in mourning following the tragic death of former Penrith and Wests Tigers hooker Masada Iosefa after a quad-bike accident near Darwin.

He suffered fatal injuries after crashing in the Northern Territory rural township of Herbert on Monday night, the day before his 33rd birthday.

The Samoan-born hooker made his NRL debut for the Panthers in 2008, aged 20, and played 43 matches for the club before switching to the Wests Tigers in 2012. He made a further 14 NRL appearances at the Tigers.

AFLW returns for its 2021 season determined to learn from its COVID-shortened 2020

In 2020, AFLW was called off with just the preliminary and grand finals remaining after the Federal Government banned all "non-essential" domestic travel in March.

AFLW fans have snapped up thousands of seats to round one of the competition on the first day that all women’s matches charged spectators an entry fee, with Richmond’s Punt Road Oval clash a sellout.

Tickets to AFLW games over the first four seasons have been free – save for a handful of matches where tickets were sold at $2 for operational purposes – but this year spectators will pay $10 entry.

The Tigers announced that Sunday’s Punt Road Oval clash with the Brisbane Lions had sold out in just over an hour, with a 1300-person capacity in place due to pandemic restrictions.

Tokyo 2020: Uncertainty persists over Olympics and Paralympics as IOC meets

When members of the International Olympic Committee's executive board dial in to their first video conference of the year today, they will do so amid mounting uncertainty over this summer's delayed Tokyo Games.

Last year's unprecedented postponement was arguably the biggest peacetime decision ever taken in sport. But that would be completely overshadowed by an actual cancellation.

If they happen, the Games will look very different to what we are used to. Athletes will be tested regularly, including before they board the plane to Japan. Their movements will be strictly regulated, their time in the village limited. There may only be Japanese fans, with those at venues asked not to shout.
