🏃🏼‍♀️💨 icymi: Just five days after smashing her personal best in the 1500m to set a new Australian record, Jessica Hull obliterated the world record in the rarely-raced 2000m. The 27-year-old clocked 5:19.70 in Monaco, beating the previous record set by Ethiopia's Genzebe Dibaba in 2018 of 5:21.56s. (Watch on YouTube)

⚾️ Oregon State second baseman Travis Bazzana is set to make Australian sporting history on this morning as the country’s first player to be taken in the opening round of the Major League Baseball draft.

At this stage, it looks like Bazzana will either go first overall to the Cleveland Guardians or drop to fourth and be taken by the Oakland Athletics.

That is at least what most mock drafts are projecting.

Fourth pick would still see him sign for over AU$12m.

🥊 Aussie world champion Skye Nicolson has remained undefeated with a dominant win over Dyana Vargas in Philadelphia.

The 28-year-old retained her WBC featherweight title with a clean sweep of 100-90 on the cards.

⛹🏻‍♀️ Super Netball: The Thunderbirds secured top spot with a hard-fought 64-62 win that ensured it will be the Lightning heading to Perth for a do-or-die elimination final with the West Coast Fever.

The result ensures Thunderbirds now have the double chance - with the grand final already locked in for Adelaide.

🎾 icymi: Spare a thought for Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson who failed to convert on three championship points during their loss to Harri Heliövaara and Henry Patten in the men's Wimbledon doubles final.

🏏 Ricky Ponting has been dumped by his Indian Premier League franchise, the Delhi Capitals.

The Capitals announced the decision to move on from Ponting, who was out of contract, in a long post published on X.

Boys will be boys

📄 Match Report: Jaydn Su'A sent a clear message to Maroons coach Billy Slater following his Origin exclusion, while the Dragons narrowly defeated the Broncos 30-26, severely denting Brisbane's premiership aspirations.

It was unclear if Leilua’s action was intended to be part of “Try July”, an initiative from a bookmaker that donates $5000 to cancer charities whenever players pull off try-scoring celebrations.

A post on Reddit using the creative caption “Checking his teammates tonsils” generated hundreds of likes and a wide range of comments.

📄 Match Report: Tom Trbojevic marked his return to fullback with a commanding performance, guiding Manly to a resounding 44-6 victory over the Newcastle Knights on Old Boys' Day at 4 Pines Park.

O’Brien said his side “got what we deserved” after they were exposed in defence while barely firing a shot in attack.

✍🏼 The Storm are reportedly open to releasing Jason Ryles effective immediately to allow the incoming Eels coach to focus purely on his new club ahead of the 2025 season.

Bellamy to continue:  Storm general manager Frank Ponissi said the master coach “couldn’t even spell retirement, let alone consider it”.

Bellamy announced in May he would coach on until the end of the 2025.

This is Awkward

📄 Match Report: The Finals dream is alive for Gold Coast, overcoming Port Adelaide by 14 points at People First Stadium to keep its perfect home record intact.

The 14.12 (96) to 12.10 (82) triumph also broke a 13-year drought for the Suns, beating the Power for the first time since club's historic first win in 2011.

📄 Match Report: Toby Greene produced a vintage performance versus Richmond. However it was far from convincing against the side stuck on the bottom of the ladder as GWS recorded a 17.6 (108) to 12.12 (84) victory.

📄 Match Report: Brisbane surged into the top four with their sixth consecutive victory, overcoming a spirited West Coast side at Optus Stadium. Despite the Eagles' inspired play following a week of significant changes, including the departure of coach Adam Simpson, the Lions held their nerve in a thrilling contest.

They eventually secured a hard-fought 16.10 (106) to 14.9 (93) victory, displaying composure down the stretch.

👋🏼 Departing West Coast coach Adam Simpson bid farewell to the Eagles in a heartwarming moment ahead of Sunday’s game against the Brisbane Lions.

After 11 years in charge of the club the Eagles brought the 48-year-old out ahead of the opening bounce to address the crowd.

“This is a little awkward,” Simpson said before getting into his speech.

“Really quickly just on behalf of the players, the coaches and the footy club we’d just like to thank you guys for your support over the last 11 years it’s just been an amazing run.

“We’ve had a lot of success … how good was ‘18.”

Spain Double

⚽️ Euro 2024: Spain have won seven games out of seven in Germany to win the European Champion for a fourth time.

England’s quest to end 58 years of pain and disappointment ended in failure.

Nico Williams' strike early in the second half put Spain ahead but Cole Palmer's brilliant leveller had looked set to send the game into extra time before Oyarzabal pounced four minutes from time.

🎾 Carlos Alcaraz powered to victory over an out-of-sorts Novak Djokovic in a bewildering final to retain his men's singles title at Wimbledon.

A repeat of last year's showpiece, it failed to live up to the five-set thriller of 12 months ago as Djokovic appeared mostly helpless against the dominant Spaniard.

After squandering three championship points when trying to serve out the victory, Alcaraz held his arms aloft after battling through the third-set tie-break for a 6-2 6-2 7-6 (7-4) win.

Alcaraz shows his remarkable athleticism

Gracious in defeat, Djokovic shared a smile and warm embrace with Alcaraz at the net after the comprehensive defeat.

Spenny Tickies: Apparently the WORST SEAT for Sunday’s final was more than AU$14,800.

🚴🏻 TDF: Tadej Pogacar took a huge step towards reclaiming the Tour de France title as he produced another superb ride to claim a second straight stage win.

The two-time champion soloed to victory on stage 14 and followed that up by dismissing his competition on the climb to the stage 15 finish in Plateau de Beille.

General Classification:

  1. Tadej Pogacar (Slo/UAE Team Emirates) 61hrs 56mins 24secs

  2. Jonas Vingegaard (Den/Visma-Lease a Bike) +3mins 9secs

  3. Remco Evenepoel (Bel/Soudal- Quick Step) +5:19

⛳️ Robert MacIntyre (-18) made up for last year's Scottish Open heartbreak as he snatched a stunning victory on home soil amid rapturous scenes.

Aussie Adam Scott rolled back the years to finish 2nd at -17.

🏉 International Rugby Wrap: A resurgent Wallabies earned their first three-game winning streak since 2021 on Saturday with a hard-fought 36-28 victory over Wales, who extended their horror run to nine straight defeats.

Ciaran Frawley struck a brilliant drop-goal with the last kick of the game as Ireland (25) edged South Africa (24) in a hugely dramatic Test in Durban to earn a draw in a captivating series between the world's top two sides.

Replacement Beauden Barrett inspired a New Zealand fightback in their 24-17 win over England to claim the series 2-0 at Eden Park.

The All Blacks trailed by four points before two-time world player of the year Barrett was introduced off the bench to set up Mark Tele'a's second try and break English resistance.

Scotland made it two wins from two on their summer tour with a comfortable 42-7 victory over USA in Washington DC.

Australia’s Trans-Tasman win drought will enter its 30th year after the Wallaroos fell 62-0 to New Zealand in Brisbane.

🏀 Kevin Durant, who missed practice again with a calf strain, and likely won't play when the Americans face Australia in a friendly set for 02:00 on Tuesday.

⚾️ Aaron Judge set a New York Yankees franchise record on Saturday with his 34th home run before the All-Star break.

Roger Maris hit 33 before the break in 1961, the year he finished with a major league record of 61. Judge matched that mark in 2022 and went on to hit 62 homers, breaking what had become an American League full-season mark held by Maris.
