Special Bonus Edition of Sport Journal

G’day Sports Fans,

I forgot to say in Wednesday’s edition, there wouldn’t be an email on Friday or Monday.

Thanks for all of the emails asking where the hell it was yesterday.

I felt bad, so here’s a bonus edition of Sport Journal.

Slightly different format today, I’ve added in some of the more unique things I’ve seen in the world of sport this week.

See you Wednesday!

🏏 Starc Shines as Australia Dominate Day One in Adelaide

Mitchell Starc delivered career-best Test figures of 6-48 as Australia bowled India out for 180 on day one of the second Test. Starc’s pink-ball mastery dismantled India’s batting, claiming key scalps including KL Rahul and Virat Kohli.

In reply, Australia reached 1-89 at stumps, with Nathan McSweeney (38*) and Marnus Labuschagne (20*) steadying the innings under the lights.

🎾 Nick Kyrgios has utilized his protected ranking to secure a spot in the main draw of the 2025 Australian Open. The 29-year-old has been sidelined since June 2023 due to knee, foot, and wrist injuries. He plans to return to competition at the World Tennis League in Abu Dhabi from December 19-22, followed by the Brisbane International later in December.

🏃🏾‍♂️ Gout Gout Sprints Into Australian Athletics History

Queensland’s Gout Gout stunned the track world with a blistering, wind-assisted 10.04 seconds in the All Schools Championships 100m heat—Australia’s fourth-fastest time in any conditions.

Just hours later, the 16-year-old shattered the national under-18 record with a wind-legal 10.17 in the final, solidifying his status as a generational sprint talent.

Gout, who will train with Olympic champion Noah Lyles in January, is now aiming for the World Championships and Olympic gold, declaring, “Now I’m up there, I couldn’t be happier.” Watch this space.

🏉 icymi: James Tedesco Commits to Roosters with One-Year Extension

James Tedesco has signed a 12-month contract extension, keeping him at the Sydney Roosters until 2026. The 31-year-old’s deal ensures stability as the club navigates a transitional period following the departure of senior stars.

Tedesco, proud to remain with the Roosters, said, “I’m excited to continue playing for this incredible club.” Coach Trent Robinson praised his leadership, confirming Tedesco will stay at fullback for the next two seasons.

👋🏼 Longtime Collingwood recruiting manager Derek Hine has departed the club as the Magpies’ off-field shake up continues.

Collingwood confirmed on Friday the two parties had mutually agreed to part ways, ending Hine’s 21-year stint at the club. (Fox Sports)

RANDOM “SPORTS NEWS”

⚽️ Thievy Bifouma, nearing the end of his career, aspired to face Cristiano Ronaldo. Seizing an opportunity, he signed with Iran's Esteghlal, aiming for an AFC Champions League match against Ronaldo's Al Nassr.

However, Bifouma mistakenly joined Esteghlal Khuzestan instead of Esteghlal FC.

Despite the mix-up, Bifouma has performed well, scoring three goals and providing two assists in nine league games this season.

🎯 Massive Kim Jo-il vibes (the North Korea dictator claimed he shot 38 under, including 11 holes-in-one, at the 7,700-yard championship course at Pyongyang in the VERY FIRST golf round of his life).

Snooker pro, Shaun Murphy, claiming the trifecta of a 147 break, nine-dart finish, and hole-in-one, stepped up on live TV to prove his darting prowess.

I’ve yet to meet anyone else who has done all three. You wouldn’t believe how many people don’t believe me. Jealousy is a terrible thing.

- Shaun Murphy

At a live event, the snooker champ faltered with just four points, sparking skepticism of his massive feat from darts legend Michael van Gerwen.

🏏 Robinsons Defy the Odds

Two England cricketers, wicketkeeper Ollie Robinson and bowler Ollie Robinson, share the same name and December 1 birthday. ChatGPT claims the odds are 1 in 1.3 trillion and a headache for statisticians and the scorer alike.

🏎️ McLaren made a perfect start in their bid to secure their first constructors' title since 1998 at the season-closing Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

McLaren head Ferrari by 21 points with 44 remaining and ended Friday practice with a one-two, Lando Norris ahead of Oscar Piastri. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc will start Sunday's race no better than 11th because of a penalty.

Leclerc was given a 10-place grid drop because Ferrari needed to fit a new battery to his car, and that exceeded his allowance of two for the season.

Norris headed Piastri by 0.234 seconds ahead of the Haas of Nico Hulkenberg, a surprise in third place.

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz was fourth fastest, 0.582secs off the pace, ahead of Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton, Leclerc and the Sauber of Valtteri Bottas.

🏀 NBA Returns to China After Four-Year Hiatus

The NBA will return to China in October 2025 with preseason games between the Brooklyn Nets and Phoenix Suns in Macao. This marks the league’s first visit since 2019, following tensions over Hong Kong protests. Years of diplomacy, led by NBA China CEO Michael Ma, have mended the lucrative partnership.

🏏 Harry Brook and Brydon Carse Star as England Dominate Day One

Harry Brook’s dazzling 123 from 115 balls rescued England after a shaky start, adding 174 with Ollie Pope (66) to lift the tourists to 280. Despite early batting collapses, England’s bowlers hit back, with Brydon Carse dismissing Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell to leave New Zealand struggling at 86-5, trailing by 194.
