🥇 It is a genuine possibility that in Paris this year Australia will record its highest medal tally in athletics at an Olympic Games since 1956.

Many of Australia's top medal prospects in athletics were selected for the Paris Games in Adelaide on Sunday evening, becoming the first track and field athletes picked following the conclusion of open competition at the national titles.

The field athletes picked were high jumpers Nicola Olyslagers and Eleanor Patterson, discus giant Matt Denny and long jumper Chris Mitrevski.

The track athletes named were Michelle Jenneke (100m hurdles), Claudia Hollingsworth (800m), Abbey Caldwell (800m), Peter Bol (800m), Jessica Hull (1500m), Lauren Ryan (10,000m) and race walkers Jemima Montag, Rebecca Henderson, Rhydian Cowley and Kyle Swan.

🏉 The Rabbitohs have reportedly made a decision to keep Jason Demetriou on life support for at least a few weeks.

It emerged during the week that the Rabbitohs had begun to compile a list of candidates to replace Demetriou if the club decided to swing the axe.

As first reported by foxsports.com.au, the Rabbitohs will keep Demetriou in charge at least through to the club’s next game against the Storm on Anzac Day.

The club has a bye in Round 7, and then have a tough run of games against the Storm and Penrith.

The Daily Telegraph’s Phil Rothfield on Sunday morning also reported South Sydney officials will wait to see how the team performs against the Storm and Panthers before making a decision on Demetriou’s future.

🐴 icymi: Pride Of Jenni produced one of the greatest performances ever witnessed on an Australian racecourse when winning the $5 million Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on Saturday.

However, the horse and jockey Declan Bates set up a Secretariat-like lead down the back straight and he kept powering to the line to score an unbelievable victory.

⛳️ Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler holds a one-shot lead heading into the final round of the Masters, with two Australians still in contention as the action at August draws towards a close. Arsenal were desperately disappointing and well beaten as Villa boss Unai Emery made a winning return to his former club.

Liverpool's Premier League title hopes suffered a huge blow as they fell to a 1-0 defeat by Crystal Palace at Anfield.

Eberechi Eze converted from Tyrick Mitchell's cut-back to finish off a flowing Palace move early on and the visitors were deservedly in front at the break.

Jurgen Klopp's Reds ramped up the pressure in the second half but, just as in recent games against Manchester United and Atalanta, their finishing let them down as they fell to a first league loss at home since October 2022.

It completed a perfect weekend for reigning champions City, with Pep Guardiola's side now two points clear of Arsenal who are ahead of third-placed Liverpool on goal difference.

While Andreas Pereira scored twice to give Fulham a rare win at West Ham in the Premier League (2-0).

👊🏻 All it takes is one moment of brilliance to steal the entire show.

With a total of 12 current or former champions fighting at the landmark UFC 300 event in Las Vegas, it was going to take something extraordinary to stand out, but Max Holloway rose to the challenge.

With only 10 seconds remaining of his lightweight contest with Justin Gaethje for the symbolic BMF title, Holloway pointed to the floor, inviting his American compatriot to stand and trade blows.

With the pair swinging wildly, burning the final remnants of their energy following a gruelling five rounds, it was Holloway who connected hardest, sending Gaethje crumbling to the canvas with one second remaining.

The sold-out crowd at the T-Mobile Arena burst into a deafening roar, while TV cameras showed wowed expressions on the faces of fighters watching on at octagon-side.

🏀 Victor Wembanyama's rookie season with the San Antonio Spurs is over.

His final numbers: 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists and an NBA-best 3.6 blocked shots per game.

🚴🏻 Tom Pidcock claimed victory in the men’s Amstel Gold Race on Sunday, while in the women’s race Marianne Vos took a frenetic sprint on the line but only after Lorena Wiebes celebrated too early.
