Take it or Leave it

Essendon are reportedly happy to see Giant's young gun Jye Caldwell head to the pre-season draft after their straight swap offer for a future second-round selection rejected by GWS.

Caldwell, 20, requested a move to the Bombers last month, with GWS and Essendon hoping to land a deal.

According to SEN’s Sam Edmund, the Giants could be left with nothing if they let their prized midfielder walk to the pre-season draft following a rejected bid.

β€œEssendon has offered a future second round pick for Jye Caldwell,” he said on AFL Trade Radio’s Trade Afternoons.

β€œGWS has told Essendon they want more, Essendon are now saying take it or leave it, and if you leave it then β€˜we’ll walk Caldwell to the pre-season draft’. (ZeroHanger)

Ponga’s contract revelations

Kalyn Ponga can speak to rival clubs from November 1 next year after details of new extension were published on the NRL’s website.

While he re-signed with the Knights until 2024, Ponga has options in his favour for 2023 and 2024.

β€œI feel at home here It’s no secret I want to win a comp in Newcastle, I want to hold the trophy up here. - Ponga said when re-signing for the Knights

However, despite playing for the Junior Kangaroos and Queensland at State of Origin, Ponga has often been linked to making a code switch to the All Blacks.

That could become a possibility if he opts to explore other opportunities in 12 months time, to try and get in the All Blacks 2023 World Cup squad.

β€œIt would be high risk on his part. He could take that risk if he wants, but this All Blacks team has some guys who are pretty big competitors and like to succeed. I think he needs two years. - John Kirwin

πŸ€• South Sydney lock Cameron Murray has been ruled out of the rest of the 2020 State of Origin series, as has Queensland young gun AJ Brimson who was quality in game one.

❌ Former Brisbane Broncos coach Anthony Seibold’s return to coaching in the NRL has reportedly collapsed at the final hurdle.

Seibold was in talks to take on a role as an assistant coach at the Newcastle Knights alongside Adam O’Brien, according to the Courier Mail.

✍🏼 Signings November 5th

  • Jennings, Johns sign Storm deals: Parramatta Eels centre/winger George Jennings has signed on for two seasons while Queensland State of Origin squad member Brenko Lee, and exciting young playmaker Cooper Johns have inked new one-year deals.

  • Roosters re-sign veteran trio: veteran stars Jake Friend, Josh and Brett Morris confirmed after each club submitted their first squads for 2021 (NRL)

Champion jockey claims sixth Oaks by rolling unbackable favourite

Coolmore filly Personal claimed the VRC Oaks (2500m) on Thursday, storming over the top of Salto Angel and odds-on pop Montefilia.

Damien Oliver chalked up his 122nd career Group One with a well-timed ride to pick off the Danny O’Brien-trained Salto Angel - thwarting the stable for whom he won the Oaks for last year aboard Miami Bound.

It was a momentous Group One win for the Lindsay Park duo of Tom Dabernig and Ben Hayes, being their first success at the top level without the now Hong Kong-based David Hayes.

Race favourite Montefilia was in a duelling battle for most of the long Flemington straight but fell short of a third G1 success.

Both sides ring the changes

Australia

Rennie dropped the bombshell decision to move Reece Hodge, who usually plays wing or fullback, to playmaker at number 10, with Matt To’omua and James O’Connor both still out injured.

Rennie has also handed NSW Waratahs’ enforcer Lachlan Swinton a debut aged 23 at the expense of Ned Hanigan, who drops to the bench.

Former Queensland Reds captain James Slipper will become the 13th Wallaby to play 100 Tests.

Wallabies (1-15): James Slipper, Brandon Paenga-Amosa, Allan Alaalatoa, Rob Simmons, Matt Philip, Lachie Swinton, Michael Hooper (c), Harry Wilson, Nic White, Reece Hodge, Marika Koroibete, Hunter Paisami, Jordan Petaia, Tom Wright, Tom Banks

Reserves: Folau Fainga'a, Angus Bell, Taniela Tupou, Ned Hanigan, Liam Wright, Tate McDermott, Noah Lolesio, Filipo Daugunu

New Zealand

  • Beauden Barrett plays his preferred 10, with Jordy going to 15, Scott Barrett makes it a trio for the family, in the second row.

  • Ardie Savea returns at 8 and Sevu Reece comes into the side on the wing.

New Zealand (15-1): Jordie Barrett; Sevu Reece, Anton Lienert-Brown, Ngani Laumape, Rieko Ioane; Beauden Barrett, TJ Perenara; Ardie Savea, Sam Cane (capt), Akira Ioane; Sam Whitelock, Scott Barrett; Ofa Tuungafasi, Codie Taylor, Karl Tu’inukuafe.

The Nine Network is set to become the new home of rugby union.

The Australian reports that Rugby Australia has brokered a deal that will see Super Rugby and Wallabies tests live on Channel Nine and the streaming service Stan.

Fox Sports has broadcast rugby for 25 years.

Earlier this year, former Head of Fox Sports Peter Campbell said the rights from 2021 were β€œa matter for Rugby Australia” in response to media reports that Foxtel and RA had been unable to strike a new deal.

It’s been reported that Nine’s offer to Rugby Australia was about $30 million, plus free advertising.

Big Bash schedule

The Big Bash League will kick off on December 10.

The grounds for the first 21 matches have been confirmed, with the final 35 matches to be confirmed at a later date.

The 10th season of the BBL will begin in Tasmania with the Hobart Hurricanes facing reigning champions the Sydney Sixers at Bellerive Oval.

Due to all the COVID requirements set by the government and the sporting code, the Big Bash will spend stages in various bubbles.

The first stage of this season will be played in Hobart and Canberra hosting the eight teams before matches in Adelaide and Queensland.

Cricket Australia is hoping eased border restrictions in coming weeks will allow the competition to be played freely across the country in 2021.

The Melbourne Stars will take on the Brisbane Heat at Manuka Oval in Canberra’s first game of the tournament on December 11.

11 matches are set to be played across six days from January 22, before a five-match finals series which will begin on January 29.

🎾 Tennis

Queensland could lose the Brisbane International and the ATP Cup because of COVID-19 restrictions.

Organisers continue to plan for the Brisbane International and ATP Cup to be played at the Queensland Tennis Centre but concede the summer of tennis may take place entirely in Melbourne.

A reported deadline of next week for a guarantee from various state governments that borders will open to allow players to fly around Australia and that players will be able to leave their hotels during a 14-day quarantine period for on-court practice has tournament organisers running out of time to secure their events.

Tennis Australia chief executive Craig Tiley has not ruled out shifting the summer season’s entire schedule to Melbourne to ensure players don’t miss the Australian Open at Melbourne Park because of border restrictions that could leave them stranded outside of Victoria.

Blows world record after miscounting laps

Lithuanian world champion Danas Rapsys was on course to challenge the 400m freestyle world record on day one of match eight at the International Swimming League in Budapest - but miscounted the number of laps he had swum and stopped after 350m.

The Energy Standard swimmer was well clear of the field and, after realising his error, raced to the finish to cling on to victory by 0.10 seconds.
