The Best Ever

🏉 Headline: Penrith won a record-extending fourth straight premiership with a 14-6 victory over Melbourne in a pulsating and dramatic NRL grand final.

Ivan Cleary’s side became the first team in six decades to win four straight premierships and the first in the NRL era, running in three tries to one to continue their remarkable dynasty.

The match wasn’t without controversy, however - in the 50th minute when Storm centre Jack Howarth was denied a go-ahead try in controversial circumstances.

It was sent upstairs as no try by referee Ashley Klein and the Bunker official Grant Atkins upheld the decision, despite replays appearing to show Howarth grounded the ball.

On the hour mark the Panthers extended their lead when Martin showed great commitment to follow through and catch a bomb before finding Moses Leota who offloaded for Alamoti to dive into the corner to make it 14-6.

The Panthers have conceded an average of nine points in their past 12 finals matches.

🏅 Panthers back-rower Liam Martin has capped a superb season by taking home the Clive Churchill Medal as the player of the grand final.

Martin came up with a crucial try and made 46 tackles as he carried his State of Origin form into the biggest game of the season.

🗣️ Aftermath: NRL head of football Graham Annesley has confirmed the decsiion was correct.

"The ball is sitting on top of the arm, which then gets lifted up.

"They (the bunker officials) are looking at this over and over again before they announce their decision while we generally have one replay.

"We don't have time to clinically examine it like this but the bottom line is that the decision was correct."

🧛‍♂️ Cameron Munster has vehemently denied biting Penrith's Paul Alamoti as the Melbourne five-eighth nervously awaits the outcome of the NRL's match review committee.

Munster will find out on Monday morning if he has been charged by the NRL.

"They (the match review committee) will deal with it later ... I just saw saliva." - Ref Ashley Klein.

Munster: "I spoke to Ash about the allegation and he pretty much just told me that if someone alleges a certain thing, they have to put a report and it's up to the judiciary," Munster said.

"But honestly there's nothing in it ... So I'm very confident I'll get off."

🏆 NRLW Grand Final: The Sydney Roosters held off a furious Sharks comeback to claim a thrilling NRLW grand final victory.

The Roosters led 24-0 at half-time, before Cronulla came roaring back in the second half to pull within two.

Monster Contract

The Saints have announced they’ve signed key forward Max King to a monster extension, which will keep the 24-year-old at Moorabbin until the end of 2032.

Nearly a month after the news of Mac Andrew signing a nine-year deal with the Suns, the Saints were keen to lock down one of their franchise cornerstones.

King was already contracted until the end of 2026, but has added six more years to the deal. He’ll be 32 when the contract runs out.

I’m pumped to be here for a few more years, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” King said via a club-issued statement.

Cycling around Australia

In 1899, a cyclist left Perth with the aim of riding the circumference of the Australian mainland. It took him 245 days. In the century to follow, that record mark has slowly been whittled down. On Saturday, Australian pro cyclist Lachlan Morton smashed a new best time for cycling around Australia – finishing the 14,200km journey around the continent in just 30 days, nine hours and 59 minutes - smashing the previous record by nearly a week.

Morton finished in his home town of Port Macquarie, on the New South Wales mid north coast, on Saturday afternoon. “I’m pretty smoked, mate,” he told Guardian Australia a few hours later. “Nice to be done, for sure. I’m definitely feeling it.”
