🗞 Time to rebuild

G'day sports fans,

Classic quote: "Golf and sex are about the only things you can enjoy without being good at." - Jimmy Demaret

In today's edition of Sport Journal:

🇦🇺 Collingwood and Lynden Dunn's mullet beat Crows

🏉 2020 Panthers better than 2003 version

🏉 NRL

The 2003 Penrith Panthers were one of the most exciting NRL premiers we've seen, but one of that team's biggest stars, Luke Lewis, says this year's team is even better.

Thursday Preview: 🐔 Roosters v ⚡️ Storm

  • The Roosters have done it tough through injury, but they’ve done extremely well to win three games in a row to remain in the top four.

  • After dismantling the Bulldogs last week, Melbourne has now won each of their last seven games.

  • The Roosters are odds-on favourites with home-field advantage as well as both Cameron Smith and Cameron Munster absent for the Storm.

🇦🇺 AFL

Adelaide Crows 5.8 (38) Collingwood 10.2 (62): Collingwood by 24

The Magpies have cushioned themselves within the top eight after surviving a major scare from the winless Crows

In a video of a post-game review with midfielder James Worpel, Hawthorn assistant Sam Mitchell's coaching style was revealed. Turns out his methods can be used to assess the AFL's best teams too.

Today: Gold Coast (1.65) vs Essendon (2.30):

  • The Gold Coast fell four-points shy of defeating St Kilda, but there was plenty of merit in the Suns’ performance.

  • Essendon’s injury list is already a mile long, and it’s going to be tough.

  • Essendon however, have won each of their last 4 against Gold Coast

  • the last 4 night matches between the two have gone UNDER total match points (123.5pts)

⚽️ Football

Today: Perth Glory v Western United FC: Adelaide United's draw against Melbourne City on Tuesday night has booked Glory's spot in the top six but Mark Rudan's side have work to do to secure finals football. If they pick up three points in their final three games, United will qualify for the Finals Series in their maiden A-League campaign. (match preview)

Today: Western Sydney Wanderers v Melbourne Victory: Wanderers (ninth) and Victory (tenth). The time to start rebuilding for the 2020/21 campaign has already begun and what better way to head into the next season than with a win. (match preview)

Thursday (5am): Atalanta (3.70) v PSG (2.0): The style of football produced by Atalanta is an absolute joy. Mbappe (ankle) looks unlikely to return for PSG. Expect goals.

Champions League: The rules players are following during 'final eight' in Lisbon

  • In the hotels, players should have private access routes and a private dining area, while food should only be served by the team's own staff.

  • Doping control officers would usually observe from close quarters when players produce a urine sample - how about a mirror in front of the toilet so they can watch?

  • Planes and buses must be thoroughly disinfected and, "to minimise contact with the general public", players will be using VIP arrival areas at airports.

  • No swapping jerseys after the match

⛳️ Golf

Collin Morikawa, 23, wins PGA Championship in second career major

Collin Morikawa will have to settle for the shot seen -- but not heard -- around the world, an epic drive to the 16th green Sunday at TPC Harding Park that set up an eagle putt and a 2-shot victory at the PGA Championship.

65 in Round 3 & 64 in Round 4. Morikawa's 129 is the lowest weekend score by a major winner...ever.

Wyndham Championship Preview

Venue: Sedgefield Country Club, North Carolina, USA

Course stats: Par 70; 7,086 yards

Course summary: Sedgefield is another famous Donald Ross design which has hosted the Wyndham since 2008. The smaller than average Bermuda grass greens will challenge the players’ accuracy and ability to hit greens in regulation consistently. This parkland track isn’t the longest on tour and will certainly play into the hands of accurate players who score low, with winning scores averaging around 20-under-par recently.

Purse: US$6.4 million

Defending champion: JT Poston (-22)

Of the favourites Patrick Reed (17.0), the 2013 winner, would be the preference. Can't have Webb Simpson at single figures.

Chez Reavie (51.0) lived with the world's best just a couple of weeks ago when tied sixth at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational could be an angle.

🎱 Snooker

Trump Out!

No, not the 74 year old toddler who runs the free-world but defending champion Judd Trump is out of the World Championship after falling to a 13-9 quarter-final defeat by fellow Englishman Kyren Wilson.

World number one Trump made breaks of 72, 100 and 62 as he reduced his overnight deficit from 10-6 to 11-9.

But Wilson capitalised on a poor safety shot to move 12-9 ahead before clinching his victory with a 104 break.

🏀 NBA

"I think Jesus could be in front of me and I'd probably still shoot. It don't really matter to me," Kuzma said.

"I got an open look, it was a play that we kind of ran in practice a few times prior to the restart. Coach had faith in me, he just called my number and it paid off."

🚘 Motorsport

The Darwin SuperSprint has been confirmed to run across the new dates of August 22-23.

Forming the second leg of the historic Hidden Valley Raceway double-header, the SuperSprint event will be held seven days after the Darwin Triple Crown this weekend.

With a Townsville double-header already announced for August 29-30 and September 5-6, it means Supercars fans will have four straight weekends of racing to enjoy. (Fox)
