🗞 Utterly Ruthless

G'day sports fans,

Now classic quote: "We're playing a pretty young team. But we're confident in our system. I know the path forward. I know what we need to do." - Cleary after winning just 2 of 10 in 2019. The rest, as they say, is history.

🏉 Just in case you were under a rock last night: The Penrith Panthers have converted three years of dominance into back-to-back premierships with a clinical 28-12 dismantling of Parramatta in Sunday night's NRL Grand Final.

With Clive Churchill Medalist Dylan Edwards (281 metres), Brian To'o (299 metres), and Nathan Cleary delivering command performances on the game's biggest stage, the Panthers became the first team since the Roosters in 2018-19 to win consecutive premierships.

It's now 13,153 days since Parramatta won a Grand Final.

🗞 The headlines:

  • Ivan Cleary couldn't control his emotions as he made his way to the Panthers' bench ahead of the final siren. (nine)

  • 'Best-ever' first half sets up back-to-back crowns as Panthers dominate Eels in NRL grand final

  • ‘Extraordinary’: Phil Gould’s plan worked: Phil Gould was instrumental to the Penrith Panthers’ rebuild, so the former manager couldn’t help but bask in his success on Sunday (ABC)

🇦🇺The Kangaroos have been hit with a bombshell on the eve of the trade period, with last year's No.1 pick Jason Horne-Francis requesting a trade to a club from his home state South Australia. Horne-Francis is keen on joining Port Adelaide, the club his step-father Fabian Francis played 86 games for between 1997 and 2001(nine)

⚽️ Football Australia criticised a "small number" of Sydney United 58 fans who appeared to perform salutes and booed the Welcome to Country during last night's Australia Cup final.

🏆 The Knights created history by clinching their first NRLW premiership in a 32-12 triumph over the Eels in the grand final on Sunday afternoon.

🐴 Hall of Fame trainer Gai Waterhouse has no doubt "dream" horse Alligator Blood will raise the bar again in the Might And Power Stakes (2000m) on Saturday at Caulfield.

Alligator Blood had never raced beyond 1600m before last start eyeballing and beating "a Cox Plate field" in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Sandown Hillside.

The triple Group 1 winner led and outgunned a star-studded Underwood field, including Mo'unga, Zaaki, I'm Thunderstruck and Mr Brightside, to win quite softly in the finish.

"He reminds me so much of horses like Grand Armee (and) Juggler … you serve it up to him, he cops it, he grabs it and says give it to me again," Waterhouse said. (racenet)

🐴 Jockey Mark Zahra believes champion mare Verry Elleegant deserves one more chance after she again failed to reproduce her best form in France when unplaced at Longchamp on Saturday night.

Verry Elleegant ran only seventh in the Group 1 Prix De Royallieu behind England's Sea La Rosa, ridden by Tom Marquand.

This was the third successive loss for Verry Elleegant since she was sent to France to be trained by Francis Henri Graffard.

Manchester City 6-3 Manchester United (HT 4-0)

City: Foden (8', 44', 72'), Haaland (34', 37', 64')

United: dos Santos (56'), Martial (84', 90'+1))

⚽️ Manchester City's Erling Haaland became the first player to score three successive Premier League home hat-tricks as Manchester United were humiliated in the derby at Etihad Stadium.

Haaland's rampant start to the season continued as he made it 17 goals in 10 games since his move from Borussia Dortmund while Phil Foden scored his first treble for City as they closed the gap on pace-setters Arsenal to one point.

After their recent improvement, this was a brutal reality check for United, as the reigning Premier League champions ran riot to illustrate the gulf in class between the teams.

🐺 Wolves have sacked manager Bruno Lage after 16 months in charge following Saturday's defeat by West Ham United left them in the bottom three.

They had won one and lost nine of their past 15 Premier League matches under the Portuguese.

🐴 Alpinista won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe for the 74-year-old British trainer Sir Mark Prescott.

Luke Morris guided the grey mare to victory in Europe's richest race for the biggest success in 53 years of training for the popular Prescott.

"I'm lucky to get a good one at this time of my career," said the Newmarket trainer at Paris Longchamp.

🏎 Red Bull's Sergio Perez held off Ferrari's Charles Leclerc to win an incident-packed Singapore Grand Prix run in treacherous wet-dry conditions.

Title leader Max Verstappen finished seventh after a frustrating race that included a major error from the Red Bull driver.

Verstappen can win the title in Japan next Sunday, but would need the results of Perez and Leclerc to go his way.

However, Perez is under investigation for a safety car infringement.

Race stewards are due to rule on any penalty after the race. If given a time penalty, he could forfeit the win.

Daniel Riccardo managed to finish fifth, jumping 11 places from the starting grid.

❤️ At least 125 people have died in a crush at an Indonesian football match that has become one of the world's worst stadium disasters.

Hundreds were also hurt in aftermath of home team Arema FC's loss to bitter rivals at the overcrowded stadium late on Saturday in Malang, East Java.

The crush took place after police tear-gassed fans who invaded the pitch.

As panic spread, thousands surged towards Kanjuruhan stadium's exits, where many suffocated.

Fifa, the world's governing football body, states that no "crowd control gas" should be carried or used by stewards or police at matches.

The organisation's president Gianni Infantino said it was "a dark day for all involved in football and a tragedy beyond comprehension".
