He's got to be willing to lose

Legendary Australia captain Ian Chappell has set out how skipper Tim Paine must attack the final two days of The Gabba Test as his troops make a desperate attempt to get their hands back on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Australia will be looking to grow their first-innings lead of 54 when openers David Warner and Marcus Harris return to the crease at the beginning of day four.

The hosts' hopes of a series victory nosedived as debutants Shardul Thakur and Washington Sundar today combined for 123 runs, India's third-highest seventh-wicket partnership in Australia ever.

If Australia are to get their mitts back on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time since the 2014-15 Australian summer, Chappell said they must make rapid runs and ensure their bowlers are back in the middle midway through the final session of day four.

"I think Tim Paine has got to give himself 15-20 overs tomorrow night, so he's got to hope like hell that they don't have any delays with rain," Chappell told Wide World of Sports.

"What Tim Paine has got to do is dangle the carrot. He's got to risk losing to win the game. If they don't win they don't get the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and if they don't win that hurts their chances with the World Test Championship. So he's got no choice but to risk losing. Then if he loses some overs or a lot of overs he's still got to take that risk."

Seventy-two players to quarantine after another positive Covid test on Melbourne flight

Seventy-two Australian Open players are now confined to their hotel rooms after a positive coronavirus test result on a third flight bound for the tournament.

An Australian Open statement said: "One positive Covid-19 test has been returned from a passenger on a charter flight into Melbourne from Doha which arrived at 5.30am on 16 January.

Twenty-five players - thought to mostly be qualifiers - on board the flight from Doha to Melbourne must isolate in their room for 14 days.

"The passenger is not a member of the playing contingent and had tested negative before the flight.

"There were 58 passengers on the flight, including 25 players."

At least three players said they might not have gone to the tournament if the rules had been made clear to them.

Waller now looks to Slipper with Millions stars

Chris Waller won his first Magic Millions 2YO Classic with Shaquero on Saturday but he said She’s All Class shouldn’t be forgotten for the Golden Slipper.

Shaquero firmed from $34 to $17 for the Slipper after his big win on Saturday but She’s All Class remained at $21 despite a gallant third placing.

The I Am Invincible filly had to jump from barrier 14 and struggled to get into the race but made up plenty of ground in the straight to run a brave placing.

“I think the barrier probably cost her, she didn’t have much luck. She was brave and wasn’t entitled to finish third,” Waller said.

Waller knows She’s All Class is good enough to be winning an important race at some point based on what he’s seen so far and her thumping 4¾ length win in the Magic Millions 2YO at Wyong shouldn’t be forgotten.

“When you look back at a horse’s career you don’t say ‘we should have won the Magic Millions’,” Waller said.

“If a horse is good enough to win the Magic Millions you’ll win a lot more races. That’s how I see it.

“If she’s good enough to overcome problems and run that well at that level then I think she’s a Group 1 filly.”

Shaquero’s win was a ripper and take nothing away from him. (racenet)

Rohan Browning becomes second Australian to break 10-second barrier in 100m

Sprinter Rohan Browning has become just the second Australian ever to break the famous 10-second barrier in the 100m sprint.

Browning hurtled down the straight at the Illawarra Track Challenge on Saturday to record the lightning-quick time of 9.96sec, becoming just the second Australian to break the 10sec mark behind Patrick Johnson, who first cracked it in 2003.

The frustrating news is the +3.3m/s wind at the Sydney speedster's tail meant the run didn't book his ticket to this year's postponed Tokyo Olympic Games, as the limit on wind assistance is two metres per second.

The Green Bay Packers and the Buffalo Bills both kept their Super Bowl hopes alive with play-off wins.

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw two touchdown passes - one for Davante Adams and one for Allen Lazard - and ran in for another score, while Aaron Jones also bundled over as the Packers beat the Los Angeles Rams 32-18.

In the later game, touchdowns from Stefon Diggs and Taron Johnson, who produced a 101-yard run to score following an interception, helped the Bills beat the Baltimore Ravens 17-3.

For the Packers it is the second successive year they will play in the NFC Championship game and will face either the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or the New Orleans Saints, who play on Sunday (23:40 GMT).

The Packers have not reached a Super Bowl since they beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 in Super Bowl XLV 10 years ago and lost 37-20 to the San Francisco 49ers in the championship decider last January.

Meanwhile, the Bills have never won a Super Bowl and will hope to clinch the AFC title for the first time since the 1993 campaign.

Next up for them is the winner of the play-off between the Cleveland Browns and reigning champions the Kansas City Chiefs, with those two meeting this morning.
